Courses

 
Durban International College provides students with the Diploma of Community Welfare, which  is designed to prepare students to work at a professional level in the human services industry, in such areas as community organizations, church agencies, self-help groups and statutory services. We give special emphasis on in-classroom study with lots of fieldwork.

Community and welfare workers operate at an advanced skill level and may have responsibility for the supervision of other staff and volunteers in community services workplace providing direct client work and/or health promotion and community development projects. Welfare and community workers are employed within government departments, non government social welfare agencies, and self-help groups, commercial and industrial enterprises.
 

Description of the Qualification
The Diploma of Community Welfare Work is designed to prepare trainees to work at a professional level in the human services industry. During the course trainees will be trained in various skills which will enhance their ability to communicate and aid the sector in which they decide to specialize. Once completed trainees will be qualified to work in any number of government departments and non governmental organizations (NGO's) which service the community both in Australia and Internationally. In addition to provide trainees with the communication skills necessary to be counselors, the course also incorporates a management component which will prepare the trainee for industry specific project management and incorporates targeted managerial skills for working in teams. Duration
The Diploma of Community Welfare Work is delivered over 2 academic years and comprises of four, 9 week terms per year. The study mode is full time, which consists of a minimum of 20 teacher contact hours per week. Students are also required to complete 400 hours of field placement in a suitable Community Welfare environment. These placement hours are completed in addition to normal class time and form part of your assessment for specific units comprised within the Diploma of Community Welfare Work (CHC50702) enable students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in the real work environment. The College will be responsible for finding a suitable placement for all students and will be actively involved in selection, induction, and monitoring the placement.
Note: All students are required to present a recent police clearance certificate before they can start their placements.

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for these courses are the successful completion of Year 12 or the equivalent level of studies in the trainee's home country and minimum English level of IELTS 5.5.

Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers (AIWCW)
This Course fulfils the necessary requirements for the membership eligibility for Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers. AIWCW is the recognized professional body for welfare and community workers in Australia. It represents at a national and state level the interest of welfare and community workers employed within government departments, non government social welfare agencies, and Self-help groups, commercial and industrial enterprises.
